An Open Letter to Orange & Rockland Utilities and Con Edison
We, the residents of the Township of Mahwah, the Borough of Upper Saddle River, the Borough of Montvale, the Town of Orangetown, the Town of Clarkstown and the Town of Monroe hereby sign this petition advising Orange & Rockland and its parent company, Con Edison, of our intention to switch our utility supplier. The Electric Discount and Energy Competition Act (EDECA) enables us, as a residential energy customer in New Jersey, to shop for electric and natural gas supplies. We do this based on Orange & Rockland’s failure to recognize and respect our local ordinances, easement restrictions and property rights. As Orange & Rockland is fully aware, its deliberate failure to abide by our municipal ordinances has thrust our communities into the national spotlight related to non-existent issues, as well as federal litigation. As consumers we believe that a utility company should be in the business of providing utilities, not seeking to collect a penny at every opportunity presented. Rather than provide a utility service to residents, Orange & Rockland has made a decision to venture into other money-making opportunities; that being, selling space on their utility poles for non-utility related purposes. Orange & Rockland has chosen to do so while knowing that doing so violates the ordinances of our communities, as well as bringing controversy and discord to each these communities. O&R now sits on the sidelines as we are left to deal with a problem caused by them. Despite this, O&R happily collects money from us. As consumers we have the right to choose — and we will.
